Are you as frustrated as we are? After we gave peace a resounding vote in November, after we have been on the streets and on our phones and in our representatives' offices calling loudly and clearly for an end to war, our representatives voted on Thursday to give Bush another $94 billion dollars for more war in Iraq, AND with absolutely no timetable for withdrawal! Yes, we've had our successes-- presidential candidates speaking out against the war, 171 Representatives voting for troop withdrawal, 29 Senators voting for Feingold/Reid's amendment to bring the troops home--but many members who made one of these anti-war statements turned around and voted to continue funding the war. Very frustrating indeed. But we continue to be hopeful. We've made a real difference already--we just need to pour the pressure on even harder. Thanks to all of you who called your representatives yesterday.
Now is the time to turn to the media, flooding the newspapers around the country with letters to the editor saying how out of touch Congress is with the American people. Now is the time to publicly express our frustration and outrage, to let our Representatives know how angry we are, and encourage the public to express their own disappointment and demand change. How many more fallen soldiers will we have to mourn next Memorial Day?
Write
a letter to your local editor here, either using
our sample letter or writing your own. You can add talking
points with a click of your mouse to publicly thank your Representative
if s/he voted to bring the troops home or publicly encourage
your Representative to do the right thing now if s/he voted
No.
After you've
sent your letter to the press, print it out and fax, mail
or hand-deliver it to your
Representatives' local offices. They will be home
in the coming week for the Memorial Day weekend, so now is
a good time to target them, especially the 59
Democratic Representatives who voted against McGovern's
bill to bring the troops home by April 1, 2008 , and the 71
Senators who refused to support a similar amendment in the
Senate.
