January 25, 2008

Dear CODEPINKer,

It's that time of year again: time to throw things at the television as George Bush gives his sorry State of the Union address. We have weathered too many years of watching Bush demonize other countries, create divisions among Americans, and make a complete mockery of our beautiful country. His State of the Union addresses would be comical if they weren't so tragic. Thankfully, this will be the last Bush State of the Union we'll have to endure. It's time for us to celebrate the end of his regime—and what better way than to make it a party!

Gather with your friends and family at your home or a friendly neighborhood bar or restaurant on January 28th to watch Bush's final State of the Union address. Check out our SOTU party games and ideas and take our fun online SOTU quiz —you could win an 'Impeachment gift basket' full of CODEPINK goodies!

Even though this is a time of celebration, we need to acknowledge how the Bush Administration has attacked our constitution and the separation of powers, leaving us with devastating consequences. Our work is needed more than ever—we must stop illegal wiretapping and bring an end to torture, the illegal occupation, and the privatization of the armed forces; we can't leave it for the next administration. The criminals in office must be brought to justice. As you gather with your community in the spirit of joy, please also commit yourselves to the serious work ahead.

We hope you'll join us in DC to mark the 5th anniversary of the war in Iraq, March 12-23. We want to remind Washington that the anti-war movement continues to be a powerful force. If you can't make it to DC, please gather in your own community to mourn the anniversary and stand for peace. It's the people, banding together, who will ultimately restore our constitution and change the state of our union. See our 5 Years Too Many page for ways to link into actions around the country and in DC!

With peace and hope,

Dana, Desiree, Farida, Gael, Gayle, Jodie, Medea, Nancy, Parisa and Rae

P.S.Last week, we shared one of the pillars of the war machine—taxes—that we can bring down through personal tax revolt. Another pillar of the war machine is army recruitment; we can take down that pillar as well (and have a lot of fun in the process!)

Won't you join us on Valentine's Day, February 14th, for our Make Out Not War counter-recruitment actions? Stage a kiss-in with your sweetheart in front of a local recruitment office with the message "Don't Enlist, Stay and Kiss! That way everyone makes out."
