2008 Letters to a FREE Omar & his Mother

Apologies and support to Omar and his mother Zohra:

#1
Dear Sir,
I rejoice with you upon your release from Guantanamo Bay Prison, but I hold my head and heart in shame for my country which is responsible for this outrage of horror and injustice. Please accept my apologies and prayers for you as you once again take up life with your family. (Montana)

#2
Your courage is an example to all. Would that we had leaders like you, instead of the ones we have! (UK)

#3
Dear Mr. Omar Deghayes and Mrs. Zohar Deghayes,
I am ashamed for my country's treatment of you in Guantanamo.  These actions are evil and not from the nation I thought the US was.  You are a wonder to have survived this imprisonment with your humanity intact.  I pray for your and your family's healing and growth. (US)

#4
I can't help but feel relief. Relief that you are finally free, and relief that you bear no malice toward the USA who held you captive for six long years without due cause. What happened to you could, potentially, happen to me or any other person, and it pains me deeply that it shows a deterioration of the freedoms that we have touted for so long, but which the current administration grossly abuses and ignores. To me you are a hero of the world. (Virginia)

#5
Dear Omar --
I can't tell you how angry I am that my tax dollars were used to put you through your horrible ordeal.  Everyone I know feels the same way, but few of us would be as forgiving as you are. I'm glad you are free now and appreciate your work to help us shut down Guantanamo. (California)

Some messages were sent to Omar's mother, Zohra, usually from other mothers:

Dear Zohra,
I cannot convey the grief I bear as an American over the shameful detention of your son.  I know it is nothing compared to the pain you and your son have been through.  I am so sorry. (US)
