WE NEED DIPLOMACY WITH IRAN, NOT WAR

The drumbeat for military action against Iran continues. But Iran has not threatened to attack the United States, and there is no compelling evidence that Iran poses a real and imminent threat to the security and safety of the United States that would justify an unprovoked unilateral pre-emptive military attack. In fact, a 2007 National Intelligence Estimate (NIE), representing the consensus view all 16 U.S. intelligence agencies, concluded that Iran froze its nuclear weapons program in 2003, and an earlier NIE concluded that Iran's involvement in Iraq "is not likely to be a major driver of violence" there.

A war with Iran would have staggering economic, humanitarian, political and military consequences for both countries, and would plunge the entire region into greater chaos.

We urge direct, sustained, unconditional and comprehensive talks between the governments of the United States and Iran as a realistic way to de-escalate tensions and resolve all outstanding issues.

In these times when the Iraq war has cost the lives of over 4,000 U.S. soldiers and countless Iraqi civilians, and drained our nation's financial resources, we hope you will join us in action to stop a new war with Iran before it begins.

Check out our  ideas, tips and 'how-tos' below...

1. Get your city to pass a resolution for diplomacy, not war, with Iran! + Get your Mayor to be a Peace Mayor!

In light of ongoing belligerent remarks of US officials and presidential candidates toward Iran, CODEPINK, Global Exchange and Cities for Progress have launched a campaign to encourage cities to pass resolutions calling for diplomacy with Iran, not war.

*MAYORS FOR PEACE*On June 20, 2008, mayors from around the country were at the US Conference of Mayors in Miami, FL, and decided to table a vote (until next year's conference) on a resolution to stop war with Iran. Contact your mayor and ask him/her to be a cosponsor of this resolution!  Click here for our tips on encouraging your mayor to be a peace mayor! 41 are on board so far!

2. Educate Yourself!

Learning more about Iranian culture, staying up on current events/new articles/ books/talking points by foreign policy experts will support with the information you need to be an advocate for peace with Iran. Here are some jumping off points...

First Step: Read, Listen...

2nd Step: Take Action

3. Ask Your Press to be Critical and Vigilant!

The mainstream media is already jumping on the bandwagon about the Iranian threat. We hoped they would have learned their lesson after spreading falsehoods about WMDs in Iraq. But once again journalists such as New York Times' Michael R. Gordon, Judith Miller's sidekick in the WMD and phony aluminum tubes reporting, are quoting anonymous sources as proof that Iran is providing Iraqi militias with powerful explosives to attack US troops. For more analysis of the press and Iran, click here.

In fact, the evidence against Iran is insubstantial and full of exaggeration. Even General Pace, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said he hasn't seen any intelligence that supports the claim. We need to tell the press that now is the time to ask serious questions instead of blindly supporting the administration's headlong rush into another tragic and unnecessary war. Please contact media outlets and tell them we demand a critical, vigilant press.
