Washington, DC –– In response to Senator Dianne Feinstein’s accusations that the CIA hacked into Senate Intelligence Committee computers, CODEPINK activists will visit her DC office to expose the hypocrisy of the Senator’s anti-spying statements, given her support of NSA dragnet spying on American citizens and others abroad. Demonstrators will stage political theater to expose Senator Feinstein as “two-faced”, with one person dressed up as “pro-spying Feinstein” and another as “anti-spying Feinstein.” They will present the Senator with a pair of CODEPINK’s iconic “Stop Spying” glasses.

“It is very hypocritical of Senator Feinstein to defend the NSA’s practices of mass spying and condemn Edward Snowden as a traitor, but then express outrage when it’s possible that her committee has been spied on by the CIA,” said CODEPINK co-founder Medea Benjamin. “We completely agree with Edward Snowden in that this is an example of the ‘Merkel Effect’ in which ‘an elected official does not care at all that the rights of millions of ordinary citizens are violated by our spies, but suddenly it's a scandal when a politician finds out the same thing happens to them.’”

The alleged computer hacking happened as a result of the Senate Intelligence Committee investigating the CIA's use of secret detention and enhanced interrogation during the Bush administration. “By accusing the Senate Intelligence Committee of ‘illegally obtaining’ information about the Bush administration’s torture practices,” said Janet Weil, a CODEPINK organizer, “the CIA seems to be trying to suppress knowledge of crimes documented in the Torture Report and evade accountability. We support Feinstein’s opposition to CIA spying on her committee, and we also want her to support our opposition to NSA spying on us!“
