Gun Control advocates tell Senator Harry Reid: It's time for leadership; It's time to stand up to the NRA! Where: Senator Harry Reid's Office 522 Hart Senate Office Building Washington, DC 20510 When: 1pm, Tuesday, December 18, 2012 What: In the wake of the tragic shooting in Connecticut, a group of concerned citizens will gather in the office of Senator Harry Reid to tell him it's time to take a stand for gun control and stand up to the NRA. Coordinated by CODEPINK Women for Peace, they will bring alarm clocks to emphasize that the time for action to ban assault rifles is NOW. “While Senator Reid has indicated that he is now willing to discuss the issue of gun violence on the Senate floor, that is not good enough,” says MoveOn DC Coordinator Joan Stallard. “He needs to publicly state his support for a ban on assault weapons, and use his leadership to pass legislation that will begin to control this epidemic of violence.” “The time for discussion has long passed, we need action now,” says CODEPINK co-director Medea Benjamin. “It's time for Senator Reid to finally stand up to the NRA. It's time for him to protect our children, not their guns.” After the Aurora Colorado shootings, Senator Reid said the Senate schedule was too packed to spend time on gun control, and the last time there was a vote on assault weapons ban, Senator Reid voted against it. In August of 2010, Senator Reid was rated B by the NRA, indicating a pro-gun rights voting record. He has also received funding from the gun lobby. The NRA, the most powerful lobby in the US, has so far made no comment about the mass murder of schoolchildren in Newton, Connecticut. |
