BP to step up push to siphon crude, shut well, San Fransisco Chronicle BP is siphoning up to 1,000 barrels of oil a day from the undersea leak in the Gulf of Mexico and hopes to double that while workers close in on another attempt to shut down the well for good. A flexible tube inserted into one section of leaking pipe Sunday is now drawing about 20 percent of the estimated 5,000 barrels per day of oil pouring from the well located 40 miles from the mouth of the Mississippi River.
