McCain in the Kitchen with CODEPINK!

May 19, 2008
CODEPINK Chicago
Chicago, IL

3 CODEPINK Activistas--Julia Field, Lori Perdue, and Rae Abileah--protested McCain at the National Restaurant Association conference in Chicago with a cooking theme--pink aprons and the song "McCain is in the kitchen with George Bush... cooking up another war!" to the tune of "I've Been Working on the Railroad".

McCain opened with an attack on Obama for wanting to dialogue with Iran, stating they have weapons and rattling the saber for war. He also brought surprise special guest Senator Joe Lieberman and declared,"We are an example of Republicans and Democrats working together, what America needs!" Seems it's been a while since Lieberman was a Democrat!

After the opening warmongering around Iran we stood up with three banners:
"Don't Bomb, Bomb Iran"
"McCain: Cooking Up Another War"
and "100 more years of war?!"

We had pink aprons which worked great once the banners were taken out of our hands.

The protest was on the heels of an incredible week at the Chicago Greenfestival (www.greenfestivals.org).

A BIG thanks to Sue who coordinated the CP table at the Green Festival and the core CP Chicago team, especially Pat, Rachel, Julia, Patricia, Lori P, Nina, Lori, and Robin. CODEPINK Chicago is really linking issues and doing work on local environmental crises (like BP and steel mills in NW Indiana), a city for peace with Iran resolution, and pink direct actions!

And from the Wall Street Journal Blog, Washwire, an excerpt: "McCain’s harsh words today stemmed from Obama’s defense of his foreign policy on Saturday.

Of his plans to meet with foreign leaders, Obama said, “That’s what Kennedy did with Khrushchev. That’s what Reagan did with Gorbachev. That’s what Nixon did with Mao.” Campaigning in Oregon, Obama added: “I mean think about it. Iran, Cuba, Venezuela, these countries are tiny compared to the Soviet Union.”

“Such a statement betrays the depth of Sen. Obama’s inexperience and reckless judgment,” McCain said on Monday. “Those are very serious deficiencies for an American president to possess.”

McCain said that while Iran isn’t a superpower and doesn’t have the military of the former Soviet Union, it remains a grave threat in part because Ahmadinejad’s anti-Israel comments.

As McCain segued into his prepared remarks, three women in pink aprons stood up to protest the Iraq war. One woman climbed on her chair and waved a maroon banner while singing a song about McCain and President Bush to the tune of “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad.” The crowd, gathered for a convention of the National Restaurant Association, booed the women as they were escorted out of the ballroom."
