Sen. Angus King office visit

February 21, 2013
CODEPINK Maine
Augusta, ME

First office meeting with staff for Sen. Angus King. Marge Kilkenny, senior policy advisor, was in state for the congressional recess week.

Getting three Codepink associates through the checkpoint in the lobby of the federal building took a very long time. We took off belts, shoes, and drank water to demonstrate that we were not carrying metal bottles of who-knows-what inside.
Apparently the guards at the federal building have been told to give the order that no one is supposed to photograph "a guard doing his (sic) work." An aggressive older man ordered me to erase the photo I took of Abby getting wanded, and I did it because 1) I wanted to get to my appointment and 2) apparently the guards did not realize that when someone holds a pink rectangle up in the air, she is also taking a picture. So we still got the clandestine photos!

We presented a lot of information we thought might lead Angus to conclude that riding the "stop war spending, it's bankrupting the Treasury" platform might be a path to public acclaim.

We also talked extensively about drones with Pat Taub doing a great job of leave behinds: Medea's book, Desmond Tutu's op-ed response to King wanting special review but only of Americans on the kill list, photos of civilians killed by drones, and the "Living Under Drones" report from Stanford/NYU.

We found out that Angus favors fracking natural gas as a "transitional fuel" and that we need transitions from oil. Damage to the ground water supply would be an acceptable byproduct. We objected to this shocking idea strenuously.

Will Angus represent the people of Maine, or General Dynamics? Stay tuned....
