$650 Million to Egypt While Soltan is Dying |
Dear Supporter, Mohamed
Soltan, an American-Egyptian languishing in an Egyptian prison for
participating in pro-democracy protests, has now passed over 100 days of
a hunger strike. The US government has failed to help Mohamed, and
instead has rewarded the repressive Egyptian regime for its brutal
crackdown on dissent by sending it over 10 Apache helicopters. Now Secretary John Kerry wants to send $650 million more! Senator
Leahy of the Senate Appropriations Committee has said he’ll block the
$650 million to the Egyptian military, but we need to make sure the rest
of the Senate backs him up. We also need them to act immediately on
behalf of Mohamed, who was highlighted in the Guardian today. Just yesterday, a doctor anonymously leaked information to Mohamed’s family about his health. Here is what Mohamed is suffering from: "Severe health deterioration, he is severely underweight (previous reports of 90 lbs lost), there is presence of blood in his urine. His Internal
Normalized Ratio (INR): 8, normal average ranges from 0.8 to 1.2, a
high ratio indicates high probability of sudden bleeding, his blood glucose level : 58 ( Normal fasting levels: between 70 and 99), he has low blood pressure at 90/60. He is Hypothermic : 34 degree (37 degrees is normal) and his heart rate at 60 bpm" With these deteriorating and dangerously low levels and ratios of vitals, Mohamed's health is in real danger. It has been confirmed that Mohamed was transferred back to the prison hospital, where he is not receiving proper medical care. His life is in terrible danger. We have organized protests at the Egyptian Embassy in Washington DC and at the State Department (watch this video of Mohamed's brother Omar speaking about his situtation at a demonstration last week), but more action is needed.
