Dear CODEPINKer,

Roseanne Barr is disgusted with this rich man's coup, also known as the debt deal, that is trying to balance the budget on the backs of those who can least afford it. “The richest Americans and their corporations have no patriotism,” she wrote to us. “Like cowards, they chose to take food out of American baby's mouths instead of paying their fair share.”

Let's remember that the deficit problem was caused by disastrous wars and bloated military spending; tax cuts for the wealthy and tax dodging by corporations; and reduced federal income tax revenue due to high unemployment. The solution, then, should be to stop the war funding, slash military spending, make the wealthy and corporations pay their fair share, and create jobs, jobs, and more jobs.

The debt agreement is just the opposite. The $1 trillion in cuts will slash funding for family planning clinics, food stamps, college tuition assistance, child care and a host of other critical social programs. This will be followed by even more draconian cuts to be proposed by a 12-person "super committee" of Republicans and Democrats, and designed in a way that will likely include cuts in Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.

This right-wing coup will hurt the middle class and the poor, while giving a free pass to multi-millionaires and big corporations and continuing the disastrous wars.
