Arizona Women Will Peacefully Block ICE Raids on Immigrant Communities July 28th, 2010 |
What: Activists
with the peace group CODEPINK will occupy and block the I.C.E.
driveway as a symbolic act of conscience to oppose the "papers please"
law that goes into effect on July 29, 2010 (unless court rules
otherwise). When: Thursday July 29, 2010 at 11:00 a.m.
Where: 2035 North Central (Virginia & Central) I.C.E. On July 29, 2010, when SB 1070 is supposed to go into effect, CODEPINK women will send a strong message of opposition by blocking the I.C.E. driveway. I.C.E. raids, detentions,
deportations, and specifically the 287g program have been terrorizing
Arizona communities. The CODEPINK activists will denounce the continued
implementation of 287g that squanders taxpayer money (www.ndlon.org) and has simply failed.These policies make local police less effective because people are so scared to come forth as victims.
"We
want to stop the 287g experiment that continues to break up working
families by criminalizing our people for working," says CODEPINK
coordindator Liz Hourican. "This experiment of using local police to
enforce federal laws has taken resources away from real crime fighting. It has
divided our people, using fear and terror tactics to target immigrants
and immigrant communities. As a matter of conscience, we will escalate
our efforts to stop I. C. E. from carrying out business as usual. In a
peaceful coordinated fashion, we will resist and try to stop
