SET UP A PINK LEMONADE STAND.
What better place to register people to vote, hand out educational materials, and engage people in your community about the critical issues at stake in the upcoming election than at a pink lemonade stand? Set one on a college campus, in front of a supermarket, at a public park or farmers market in a low-income neighborhood; at a community event; or any other location that draws lots of women on the weekend. (If you need ideas, let us know.). All you need is a table, pink tablecloth, a banner made of cloth or poster board to hang on the front of the table, and pink lemonade. For voter registration materials, go to http://www.vote-smart.org/voter_registration_resources.php to download forms or find out where you can pick them up. For informational flyers, go to: http://www.codepinkalert.org/National_Actions_Florida.shtml and download the voter handbill. Just make copies of these flyers on pink paper and voila!
GO ON A CODEPINK ROAD TRIP TO DO SWING STATE OUTREACH.
Ever spent a weekend mobilizing voters in Florida, Pennsylvania, Nevada, or Oregon? Now is definitely the time to try it. It's easy to rent a bus and invite CODEPINK activists and others in your area to spend a weekend plugging into voter mobilization efforts in key states. Each passenger can share the cost of the bus and hotel accommodations, and you can coordinate either with another CODEPINK chapter in a swing state (email tiffany@codepinkalert.org) or find an organization to work with through www.nationalvoice.org or www.americavotes.org. CODEPINK San Francisco was part of a great road trip to register voters in Nevada, and they highly recommend it, for making a difference in the upcoming election and bonding with other CODEPINK activists. If you're not up for organizing a bus, you can join another road trip that's already organized or drive to a swing state and connect with a local voter group when you arrive (again, we recommend National Voice and America Votes) (NOTE: CODEPINK is a nonprofit group, so our voter registration and education efforts need to be strictly nonpartisan!)
TAKE TO THE STREETS DURING RUSH HOUR ON FRIDAY, OCT. 1
On Friday, Oct. 1st at rush hour, thousands of people are going to be out on the street holding up signs with messages about voting, in a colorful and creative display of voteactivism! CODEPINK is joining Votestar.org in this effort! GO PINK on Oct. 1st at major intersections during the Rush hour commute at 5 pm. You can do something simple like hold up a (pink) sign that says "VOTE" or "REGISTER TO VOTE" or "VOTE FOR PEACE" or you can get more elaborate and create a human billboard like we did in New York City before the Republican National Convention (see photos at http://www.villagevoice.com/issues/0433/kim.php). ORGANIZE A SCREENING OF THE VIDEO "IRON JAWED ANGELS"
It's just amazing how many women don't vote; an astounding 50 million of us in the last election. Single women are one of the most progressive voter demographic groups in the country, and these women need to be motivated! We recommend organizing a public or private screening of the just-released video "Iron Jawed Angels". Starring Oscar-winner Hilary Swank, Iron Jawed Angels is the inspirational story of women's struggle for the right to vote. You might have thought CODEPINK was hard-core with its banner-hangs and interruptions during the RNC, but you haven't seen these women! You cannot watch this film and not vote. We recommend you organize a showing of the film on a college campus, at a public library or in your home. Do it on your own or co-sponsor it with other local women's groups. PINK SLIP BUSH AND CHENEY WHEN THEY COME TO YOUR TOWN.
The Bush administration lied to get support for the war against Iraq, and now more than 1,000 U.S. soldiers and tens of thousands of Iraqis have died for these lies. Where are the weapons of mass destruction? The Iraq-Al Qaeda ties? We know that they don't exist, but so many of our fellow Americans are still unclear about basic facts regarding the Iraq war. Not to mention that the news media has relegated news about Iraq to the back pages even though the death rate there keeps going up and up. The next time President Bush or one of his top aides holds a fundraising or campaign event in your city, give the Bush administration a pink slip. Create a huge pink banner that says "Bush Lies, Fire Him" and hang it from the side of a building near Bush's event. Alert the media so they can get photos.
