Dear CODEPINKer,

In the 1960s an anti-war movement emerged that altered the course of history: The GI resistance to the Vietnam War. Brave servicemen and women demonstrated that war can end when soldiers refuse to fight. Today, these veterans are speaking out against the current wars of aggression, and their stories are inspiring a new generation of young soldiers to refuse deployment to Iraq.  In honor of war resisters and conscientious objectors, veterans from the Vietnam War and the Iraq War are joining the Troops Home Fast by committing to a national day of fasting to bring the troops home, Friday, August 11.

Fasting veterans and Cindy Sheehan will announce the launch of their Veterans' Troops Home Fast action tonight at the National Veterans for Peace Convention.

You can:

Join Cindy, war resisters, and military families in this day of fasting by pledging to fast tomorrow, August 11th.

Use the money you would have spent on food to purchase Sir! No Sir!

Join Cindy at Camp Casey 3, a war resister sanctuary this August.

Watch Sir! No Sir! And Spread the Word about GI Resistance!

This day of fasting is being organized by Vietnam veterans Mike Wong, Randy Rowland, Tom Bernard, Oliver Hirsch and Susan Schnall who shared their stories in the remarkable documentary, "Sir! No Sir! The Suppressed Story of the GI Movement to End the War in Vietnam". In the last three months, Sir no Sir has played in theaters in over 70 cities, in part due to grassroots organizing efforts of local CODEPINK groups around the country.  It is now available on DVD so you can share it with your community. Buy your copy of Sir! No Sir! today, and plan a movie viewing at your home or a public venue in your community!

The tide is turning as soldiers refuse deployment orders, and support for anti-war candidates grows, most notably evident this week in Ned Lamont's victory defeating incumbent Joe Lieberman in the Connecticut Democratic primary.  This week as we mourn the anniversary of the atomic bomb dropping on Nagasaki, Japan, and bear witness to bombs exploding in Iraq, Lebanon, and Israel, we find hope in war resisters across borders and the support they can receive from compassionate people like you.

Your Sister Resisters,
Allison, Anedra, Dana, Erin, Farida, Gael, Jodie, Katie, Laura, Medea, Meredith, Nancy, Rae, Samantha and Tiffany

  • Our Fast Trip to the Middle East has been a great success! Our 14 hunger strikers and peace delegates met with leading members of the Iraqi Parliament last Friday and Saturday in Amman, Jordan to discuss their plans for peace.  They shared heartbreaking accounts of the violence in Iraq and made plans to work jointly with the American anti-war movement to pressure Congress to set a timetable for withdrawal of the US troops. Click here for latest blogs and photos from the Middle East! Medea Benjamin, Gael Murphy, and Diane Wilson traveled onward through Syria and they are currently in Beirut, Lebanon bearing witness to the ongoing violence.  We will have a full update for you at the start of next week.  Stay posted to the news from the delegation here.
